Best Buy to increase electronics, appliance recycling
April 21 -- Electronics retailer Best Buy is looking to significantly increase the amount of electronics and appliances it collects for recycling in its retail stores.
Beginning April 22, the company is asking customers to help it meet its goal of recycling 1 billion pounds of electronics and appliances. In 2009, the company collected 120 million pounds of electronics and appliances.
"We believe our employees have the power to help people around the world live more sustainable, digitally-connected lives," said Paula Prahl, company senior vice president of communications, public affairs and corporate responsibility. "As we help consumers make smart technology choices today, we have a responsibility to help them get rid of the old and obsolete devices. This 1 billion-pound target is designed to inspire our employees and to promote greater consumer action, both of which can significantly reduce the amount of electronics in the waste stream."
The recycling campaign will include social media, store-based trade in and recycling programs, and appliance and television haul away programs.
